Inquiry update #something

Lyle has been sick for two weeks…he is finally back but we weren’t able to get much done in those 2 weeks, I did manage to re-write the piano for the song, made an intro for the song (started working on an ending), and started making ideas for the lyrics. We still have to find a person to sing (not sure if its going to be a boy or a girl yet), add some drums, finish the lyrics, record again, and film the video.  But hopefully we can do 2-4 this weekend.  Some problems we had with our last recording where all audio issues, things wouldn’t record properly and something was holding down the peddle on the keyboard (i didn’t notice because i couldn’t hear it). We do have an audio file of our old version but I don’t think i should post it yet, I also have sheet music for the piano but i don’t have a scanner so I can’t show you.

Digital Media class Feb 28,

Today in digital Media class, Heidi Gable came in to talk about copyright.  if you notice, at the bottom of this webpage: http://djearworm.com/about, you can find a disclaimer at the bottom. We where shown a video by that guy and asked why he is allowed to use other peoples music, We decided he is allowed because he is not making any money off of it (even though he is selling it), He will remove any song if the owners do not approve, and  he only uses small clips, witch is allowed.  We where also shown this website: http://creativecommons.org where you can make a creative commons listens. The listens tells people if they are allowed to share, copy, modify, or make money off of your product/website. We learned a lot more today but it is a bit hard to put into words on a blog. We learned about what is allowed when copying something, and when you can get sued for it. for an example.

Thanks for reading and I will post more information later.

Inquiry update…

Lyle has been sick ALL week, so I rarely get a chance to work on the inquiry. I was able to do a few things like, practicing the piano, writing down sheet music, thinking up a few lines that would work in the lyrics (I won’t share them right now). But I wasn’t able to do any serious work because I need the recording to think up any lyrics. So I hope lyle comes to school next week on monday so we can get some more work done, I’ve also been working on a cool effect for the music video, I haven’t talked to lyle about it yet but I was fiddling around with making water drop into buckets, whine glasses, or any kind of containers full of water in tune with the piano in the song. It will be a miner part but still would be very cool.

Im still trying to get my hands on to the recording of the song so I can’t share it this time. Hopefully next time

Digital-Media class Feb 14.

In DigitalMedia class today we where asked some questions…I find this a bit ironic because I’m posting this online…

1. Who do you want to be online?

Invisible, not even there. But myself otherwise

2. What is a digital footprint and how can you control yours?

A digital footprint is how much of an impact you leave on the internet, I make sure everything I post online is not “bad” in anyway even if a make it private.

also I don’t use Facebook, tumbler, reddit, or instagram (only twitter and youtube)

3. What recent embarrassing story of a celebrity has developed online?

Umm I’m not too sure, but I think Justin beaver peed in a mop bucket.

4. What are some strategies that you can use to stay safe online?

Not being online is the best, not saying anything is the best after that, and not saying ANY personal information is after that.

5.  Which categories of people are most vulnerable online and why?

Everyone online has the same amount of risks, it just depends what you do online that increases those risks.

6. Are offline and online risks any different and why?

Online you have all the risks you do offline plus a bunch more, If someone swears offline you have to be there to know it happened, on the internet you can be on the other side of the world and still hear it.

THE BIRDS!!!!

This morning we were showing our english video representation of a poem, We were given a week and 1 day to do this, But I was only able to work monday and wednesday, The reason for this is on monday I don’t have anything after school so I when strait to taking pictures. And on wednesday I have to stay behind at school an extra hour So it was a great time to use the big iMacs (iMovie). I was planning to get the audio into the video on thursday (It was due today on Friday) but I was too busy and didn’t have the time. So instead I used audio separated from the video (I chose forest noises with lots of birds), And lets just say that didn’t go too well. When I first started up my video It was fine, And it was fine throughout the whole video, but after the video instead of turning off the forest noises I just muted them. Then when I unplugged from the  projector the noises started up again so I muted it again. But harry needed to use my computer for his video. So he when up and plugged in, Then he hit the play button and turned on the audio and…TWEET TWEET TWEET…REALLY HIGH PITCHED…THE BIRDS. Im sure it will come up again, but lets just say the birds where really annoying.

I would put my video here but It is too large to upload, Sorry

Inquiry update #3, At least I think its three.

Lyle and I have finished writing our song, We still have to make the lyrics and the video but It is coming along.                        I would put an audio file here for you too listen to it but I don’t have it on my computer yet, It is still in Lyle’s recording device.

And that is pretty much it, Thanks for reading 🙂

Friday February 7th 2014.

3 most trusted websites…

We were asked to chose 3 of our most trusted websites (information websites). I don’t have any…

Ive been using stackoverflow.com to help me learn how to program in java, and most of the information on that site is really helpful, but it is a question/answer website so some of the answers might not be correct. but so far the community seems really nice and more then one answer is always given so I can try them out until one works. I was thinking about getting an account but today in DigitalMedia class we were talking about internet safety, and now I don’t know. If you use that website and you are happy please send me a comment.

Other then that website, I like to use information from other people or books, which seams to be a bit more reliable.

And if I where to use websites that i trust that aren’t for information I would pick: Something.com, because it never changes and all it says is “something.”, InquiryHub.org, because why not?, and finally stack overflow.com.

Thanks for reading 🙂

Inquiry update #2

I am still working with Lyle  to make a music video. We have done a lot in the last week but really not much we can share. We have the layout of the song all ready. We are still struggling to get a theme for the song, Once we have this we can work the lyrics out. We know that we wan’t to make the song somewhat dark (considering the instruments we have) but not as dark as something like the catalyst by linking park…that is just creepy.  We were thinking more like “breaking the habit” or “castle of glass”. Ive been thinking about castle of glass a lot because it has a very distinct theme to it (how much a person can make a difference in war). And thinking about that all dark songs are about something like war or poverty, And we wan’t our song to be somewhat original.  Its been hard to work to much on it this week because we were trying to get everything ready for the report cards.

A card trick without a name!

Today in Digital-Media class, we were shown a card trick (not a magic trick) that involves a lot of concentrating and random movements.

What we do is arrange the cards in order so that if we place down a card, it will be an ace, then we move the next card to the back and place down the second card that will be a 2, and so on. Confusing I know. Also the cards can be face up if you wish. you aren’t allowed to mess with the deck while placing the cards down only when you are arranging the cards so they will come up in that order. Also you can do it with as many cards as you want, From 5 up (we didn’t try below 5). We started by putting 5 cards in order. then we kept testing till we got it right. Then we did 6 cards and so on. I found out a trick where i lay the cards out on the table, and put spaces in between the 1, the 2, and the 3. If the card at the end is even the card between 1 and 2 has to be the next one in the sequence. So with 6 cards it will be, 142635. That is the order you stick 6 cards in for it to work. Carl and I managed to figure out up to 10, we didn’t have the time to go further. The order for 10 cards is: 1,6,2,9,3,7,4,10,5,8. I think I don’t have the cards on me at the moment.

Also Michael managed to do the whole deck!

Open house, Minecraft Nail, and New Inquiry

         Inquiry Hub Open House:

On Thursday January 16th the InquiryHub had an Open House. A lot of people came and I got to meet a lot of parents. I was set up with a few arduinos that I got ready for people to look at. I haven’t used arduinos since christmas break so I was a bit slow at getting it all ready. In the end I set up 2 arduinos, One with a simple song playing on it, and another with a traffic light and button.  I didn’t really know what to say when people came over but Aaron and Evan helped me out. I hope some of the people I met end up coming to the Inquiry Hub.

      Minecraft Nail:

(If you don’t know anything about Minecraft or simply don’t care skip this paragraph)

On Thursday January 16th (the same day as the open house) a couple of friends and I played a game of  “Nail” made by Rixiot  at lunch time (11:45 – 12:45).  Nail is a Minecraft PvP map (player vs player) where there are two teams of four: Attackers and Defenders. The Attackers’ job is to destroy 2 sponges at the far end of the map. The Defenders’ job is to defend it. We had a team captain vote:

Defenders: Nolan(Me), Leif,  Michael, and William

Attackers: Lyle, Josh, Harry, and LiamO(liamo.inquiryhub.org)

William took the sniping position and scored some amazing shots on the Attackers. The Defenders don’t get food like the Attackers do so Michael got us some.  There are 2 ender pearls in the map so I took one of them hoping that they would not know where the other one is. Then I joined up with William.  And finally Leif and Michael took to close combat and completely destroyed the Attackers. It ended with a victory to the Defenders!  It was a fun game and we hope to play again.

New Inquiry Idea:

I have teamed up with Lyle for a new Inquiry. We are going to make a song (with lyrics) and make a video for it

(in short a music video). We don’t have anything to share at the moment but feedback would be great. Just a short update thanks for reading :D.

3 Humans, 2 monkeys & 1 Gorilla

In digital media class today we where paired with a partner. Me with Liam (http://liamo.inquiryhub.org). We where then given 6 popsicle sticks: 3 yellow, 2 orange, and one red (3 humans, 2 monkeys & 1 Gorilla).  And where told to figure out a puzzle.

All 6 animals (yes the humans are animals) have to cross a river on a boat that can only carry 2 animals at a time, but it can also carry 1 at a time. If the monkeys and the Gorilla ever outnumber the humans you lose. The monkeys cannot move the boat by themselves, they must be on the boat with either 1 human or the Gorilla. Once all the animals are on the opposite side of the river you started on without any humans dying you win.

This reminded me of an iPad game I played called “PuzzleAgent 2”. That game was full of puzzles including something very similar to this one.

Liam and I got working on it. After a very short amount of time we thought we got it, but we missed something and left the boat on the other side of the lake by mistake. After failing there we started over and tried again a couple more times. Leif came over and told us a about another similar puzzle he had to do at one point, This gave us and idea but before we could test it our time was up. While sitting here in front of my computer writing this we think we figured it out. In our first time around we left the boat on the wrong side and then restarted, if we didn’t restart and continued with the boat on the other side we think we would have finished it.

The main problem that we had was we restarted to early each time.  Other than that I think we where doing pretty good. For our strategy we just made sure that the humans did not start for a few turns. It didn’t work to well.

Give the puzzle a try and make sure you don’t kill your humans 🙂
